A Contextual Approach to Antimicrobial Resistance in the EU: Understanding Overprescription in Primary Care by Exploring Healthcare System Determinants
Rimaux Lisa, 2023
Antimicrobial resistance (AMR) occurs when pathogens, such as bacteria and viruses, evolve to withstand antimicrobial treatments that once effectively cured infections they caused. This resistance is driven by the misuse and overuse of these treatments. AMR poses a significant global health threat by increasing the risk of disease spread, severe illness, disability, and death. This study aims to explore how healthcare system factors influence the overprescription of antibiotics in primary care settings within the EU. By examining these determinants, the research seeks to identify the most significant factors affecting prescribing behaviors. The goal is to develop targeted recommendations to reduce unnecessary antibiotic use and combat AMR.
