IMPACT OF COMPLIANCE IN ENHANCED RECOVERY AFTER SURGERY (ERAS) GUIDELINES IN ANATOMIC PULMONARY RESECTION FOR PRIMARY LUNG CANCER

Scheire Anne-Katrien, 2023
Lung cancer remains the leading cause of cancer related deaths and therefore forms a great challenge for healthcare in general. For treatment, a section of the lung is often removed, chemo- and/or radiotherapy is given, or both. In this scription specifically, anatomical lung resections are analyzed. This term is used to indicate the removal of lung tissue, together with the according arteries, veins, and bronchus. In the field of surgery guidelines were put in to place to optimize the process before, during and after surgery. These are called ERAS guidelines, short for Enhanced Recovery After Surgery. The ERAS guidelines aim to minimize the impact of surgery on the patient. This can, for example, be illustrated by a shorter postoperative length of stay or less complications. Additionally, the guidelines standardize the care before, during and after surgery for the patient and health workers. In this study, an assessment was made of the impact of the guidelines for lung resection surgery on the patient outcomes, depending on the extent to which they were implemented. RELEVANCE AND IMPACT Lung cancer remains a considerable health care challenge because of its high mortality rate. By evaluating the ERAS guidelines for lung resection surgery, an attempt was made to contribute to the optimization of the treatment process in lung cancer patients. The ERAS guidelines represent a modern treatment approach, standardizing the treatment plan in a multidisciplinary way. This may have an impact on society at different levels. For the individual, ERAS guidelines offer an evidence-based treatment plan that can lead to a decrease in morbidity and mortality. This can result in a reduced hospital stay and a better quality of life for lung cancer patients. At a societal level, the ERAS guidelines aim to minimize healthcare costs. The reduction in hospital stay and subsequent reduction of waste of health care resources are examples of how the guidelines can achieve this goal. This study reported on the ERAS guidelines, in the hope of raising more awareness of these guidelines. On the one hand, it may contribute to the rise of ERAS guidelines in the field of thoracic surgery, but it may also boost other authors to publish on (the compliance with) ERAS guidelines in other fields, where they are not yet implemented. In conclusion, this study may contribute to bridging the gap between advanced medical and academic knowledge and patient-centered care by highlighting the importance of adherence to ERAS guidelines.
