'The impact of COVID-19 on mental health of nursing home personnel. A scoping review.'

Desmit Marie, Van Landschoot Sophie, 2023
The COVID-19 pandemic, which officially started in 2019, has profoundly changed our society. The healthcare sector, in particular, has faced significant challenges. Our research focuses specifically on nursing home staff, who have been at the front lines in the battle against the virus. Based on a selection of relevant literature, our study provides insights into the impact of the pandemic on the mental health of these workers. We have identified contributing and supportive factors and offer potential prevention strategies for addressing these challenges in the future. We found that many nursing home workers were experiencing significant stress, anxiety, depression, and other mental health issues due to their exceptional dedication during these times. Some of the contributing factors included workplace pressure, a shortage of personal protective equipment like surgical masks and gowns, understaffing, and a lack of supervisor support. Although the contributing factors outweighed the supportive ones, there were several key supportive factors. These included essential support from supervisors, coworkers, and the wider community, the availability of resources, and a strong sense of coherence. In consideration of these supporting factors, specific actions on individual, organizational and governmental levels can be taken to improve and prevent deterioration of workplace mental health. Suggestions include providing support, implementing mental health programs, and addressing broader issues like understaffing and low wages. As a community, it is crucial that we understand the challenges these health care workers are facing. Only by recognizing their experiences can we provide adequate support and resources to ensure their well-being. This not only impacts them, but also the quality of care the elderly receive in nursing homes.
